Ruth A. M. Schmidt will be remembered as:
- A resident of Alaska for nearly 70 years with a deep and abiding interest in its natural history and indigenous cultures;
- A professional geologist and educator who devoted her career to a deeper understanding and protection of Alaska’s natural processes and the interaction of human beings with those processes;
- A philanthropist who wished to encourage and support a greater understanding of Alaska’s wild places and its indigenous cultures; and to motivate the positive effects of modern civilization on present-day Alaska.
